I have a saying, always take the path that leads to more learning. Meanwhile, it's usually suggested that getting out of your comfort zone is the quickest way to develop. There’s a quote that goes, “life begins at the end of your comfort zone” by Neale Donald Walsch, and I couldn’t agree more.
There’s a reason I like variety and am consistently throwing myself in different roles and pivoting my side hustles. It’s because I love to learn. The more new experiences one is exposed to, the more learning can take place. Experience in one thing is great. However, with experience comes arrogance. Of course, there’s confidence but confidence is easy to fake. Arrogance comes with doing the same thing day in and day out and knowing it like the back of your hand. When there’s arrogance, there’s less of a willingness to learn.
Always. Be. Learning.
The tagline of GENUINES is “learn. explore. create.” Why? Because learning is growth, and it only happens when you explore the options. By doing that, in the end, you will create something. Sometimes, you create something awesome, other times you create something that just utterly tanks. That said, it still results in a good learning experience either way.
So how can you make sure that you’re always learning? Here are a few steps that I take:
- Keep your workspace fresh:
This can take many forms but change up your office/creative space every so often and change up where you do your work from. If you side hustle from home change up what room you do your work in or move around your desk. If you do your side hustle from the same location, change up your wardrobe or equipment. There’s always a way to create some variety and ultimately give you some new perspective.
- Read / Watch a piece of content every day in a field you’re interested in - every day:
So many successful individuals read everyday, or read articles on the regular. Some people cook new recipes multiple times a week or learn a new concept towards a loosely related field. Everything counts and if you set yourself up on a personal curriculum schedule that includes fresh material every day to work on, you’re setting yourself up for success. Trust, as the side hustler you create new opportunities for yourself on the regular, you’re bound to use what you learn in some way.
- Think of learning as a necessity and a leisure:
Well, that just sounds contradictory. But does it really? Think about it. People learn all the time. When they’re forced to learn something, they end up learning something different in order to procrastinate from learning the original material. There were people that got way better at music when they were supposed to study for the math test growing up. There were people that learned to be entrepreneurs when they were supposed to be studying the work manual. It happens so often that people use learning as a distraction to take away from what they needed to be learning. Think of it as both and you will literally always be learning.
Super successful people all put a high value on learning and loving to learn. As a side hustler, learning should be your shit because you’re always on the move. Always be learning!
